Race Day is Getting Closer, What Will You be Eating and Drinking on Race Day?

We are getting closer to race day. I hope your training is going well. Half marathoners should be doing 12 miles for their long runs and 5k’ers should be doing a 35 to 40 min walk or jog this weekend. As our training winds down, there are a few things each of us need to think about before race day. One of those things is fuel during the race, aka food and drink.

This is of particular importance to our half marathoners but we should all think about it. Half marathoners may choose to take in some calories, in the form of GU, a Honey stinger energy bar or cliff shots. If you have not tried these or any of the others, try it this weekend on your long run. Personally I recommend taking these in around the halfway point, and then maybe again with 2 or 3 miles left. Many of these need to be consumed with water. It is important that you see how your body reacts to eating some energy and then drinking water. You don’t want to do too much at once, so you want to practice and see what works for you. You would rather feel too full or icky on a training run than on a race day. Personally I have never had any issues with GU or bars while running. But you just need to try it first.

What will you be eating or drinking on race day?
The race will provide us with PowerAde Zero for a sports drink on the course. If you have not tried PowerAde Zero and plan to take it during the race, make sure you try during a run first. If you find you don’t like it, then you know not to take it during the race.

Half marathoners, you may have your own favorite sports drink you like on long runs. You can plan on bringing your favorite or if you want to take what the volunteers give you just be sure you have tried it on your long runs.
