Macomb County Chiropractor Discusses Fibromyalgia

Chiropractic has long been touted as an effective alternative treatment in the management and treatment of fibromyalgia. But what is fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia syndrome is chronic and typically occurs in women and is characterized by generalized pain and fatigue, multiple tender points and chronically interrupted sleep patterns.

Fibromyalgia is often confused with other conditions such as myofascitis and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome just to name a few. All three conditions can cause painful tender points and fatigue. Myofascitis is defined as “inflammation of a muscle and its fascia” which is usually a direct effect of injury or overuse of a muscle. Trigger points associated with myfascitis are sensitive upon palpation and typically have referred pain. Patients with fibromyalgia syndrome usually experience more localized pain. Chronic fatigue syndrome also affects the same demographic of people as fibromyalgia. Both disorders share the same debilitating symptoms of muscle pain and persistent fatigue. Myofascitis tends to come on quickly while fibromyalgia usually is a gradual onset and progresses over time. With chronic fatigue syndrome, usually the duration of fatigue and pain has be consistent at least six months to possible diagnosis it as that disorder. It is important to diagnose each of these correctly, for they require different approaches to treatment.

How can chiropractic care help with fibromyalgia syndrome? Fibromyalgia is thought to be a disorder where the central nervous system is “hypersensitive and overstimulated” causing the ensuing pain. This imbalance can and will affect how your joints move and how the surrounding muscles and ligaments effect your overall posture and body biomechanics. Chiropractic care is very beneficial for someone with this diagnosis to help keep movement in their spine and the surrounding muscles. Improved joint movement through chiropractic adjustments allows for better range of motion and decreased irritation to spinal nerves. Increased movement can lead to decreased muscle tension and pain which also has a direct impact and a person’s ability to sleep and their fatigue levels.

With consistent chiropractic care, adjusting of the spine will allow the back to move more freely. This helps with both joint movement and muscle compliance. Treatment plans will vary from patient to patient. At Total Health Systems, we have a diverse staff of doctors that are familiar with a wide variety of adjusting techniques and are familiar with treating this condition. Treatment and technique will be appropriately tailored to your needs.
