Total Health Systems in Macomb County, MI Demonstrates How to Stretch Neck

Hi, my name is Piotr and I would like to present today a stretch for scalene muscles, which are located in front of the neck. They can be a big trouble for us, due to posture or your head being forward all the time working on a computer or being stressed out. This muscle, when it gets contracted, can trap the nerve that goes to the arm and can cause shoulder problems, heart problems and head problems.

So how do we stretch it? I want you to do is grab the table, after you grab it sit up straight so you will start to feel pulling in your shoulder. Now, you put the opposite hand under your collar bone over here, and you pull it down.  Then turn your head to the opposite side, it will be the left side in this case, until you start to feel pulling in the front of the neck. You can see the fibers of the muscle when you stretch over here. As usual for stretches, we hold it for 30 seconds. You want to give it time to over stretch your muscles so it doesn’t come back to the same mass it was before stretching. Very good, you can release it. Now try to do it from the other side. Sit up straight. Very nice. It’s very important that we use our opposite hand first to tighten up the scalene muscles before we turn the neck, because the neck muscles are much stronger.

Thank you.
