Neck Pain Pain and Your Computer

Back and Neck Pain - Bad PostureWith our lives so dependent on our electronic devices, it’s not a wonder that so many of our chiropractic care patients complain about back and neck pain. Computers, tablets and smart phones are terrible for your posture. Most people think that they are sitting tall when they are using their devices, but in reality, you end up hunched over more than you think. This weak posture causes pain in your back and neck, and over time, sitting at a computer or tablet is going to create issues with your spine and its alignment. If you find that you are suffering from back and neck pain, here are some things you can do, to feel better.

Fix Your Work Station

If you are spending a lot of time at your desk at work, in front of a computer screen, an easy way to help with back and neck pain is to make sure that your body is properly aligned with your desk, chair and keyboard. If it is an option with your employer, you may want to request an ergonomics assessment, or use one of the many online tools to help you determine on your own, if your work space is right for your body. Corrections that are often helpful in reducing back and neck pain are correcting keyboard and mouse placement, increasing back support in your chair, or using a foot rest to lift up your legs to a correct position.

Get Some Exercise

Don’t just spend the day sitting at your desk. Sitting all day in front of your computer just makes your back and neck pain worse. This is also true if you leave your desk, head home and spend your evening on a tablet, in front of your TV, or time on social media on your smart phone. One of the easiest ways to improve your back and neck pain is to get up and move. Take a walk or run at lunch time, go to the gym after work, or find a personal trainer to help you work through your back and neck issues. Exercise is one of the best things you can do for your body. If you can’t get out of the office, find some gentle stretches that can help you keep your neck and back loose during the day.

Make an Appointment with Your Chiropractor

Supplement your self-care with a good adjustment from your chiropractor. Often times, bad posture, a crummy chair, or not enough movement will cause parts of your spine and even your hips or shoulders to slip out of place. This can be due to tight muscles, sitting in a bad position, or spending too much time hunched over. Whatever the cause, an adjustment of your joints by a chiropractor will put everything in place and make your neck and back feel new again. A good routine of chiropractic care combined with self-care will help your back and neck stay healthy and pain free, even when you have to spend more time than you’d like in front of the computer.
